A tree growing from a tree. And a snake resting in A tree growing from a tree. And a snake resting inside it.

At The Giant Squirrel, Tadvai, Head Naturalist Akhil takes us a little closer to one of nature’s quieter stories.

What looks like an unusual growth is actually a young Gardenia latifolia, the Indian Lasora, growing from the root system of another tree, most likely thanks to seed dispersal.

Gardenia latifolia is a remarkably hardy species, often found in rocky and dry deciduous landscapes. But trees are much more than plants rooted to the ground. Their hollows, bark, branches and roots create tiny habitats that become shelter for an entire cast of forest residents.

And inside one such hollow?

A Common Cat Snake, also known as the Cat-eyed Snake. With its distinctive pattern and cat-like vertical pupils, this mostly nocturnal, mildly venomous snake is an accomplished climber and often spends its time in trees, hunting small prey such as lizards, frogs and rodents.

One tree. One hollow. One snake. And suddenly, what looked like an ordinary tree becomes a little ecosystem of its own.

This is Hidden Stories - moments from The Giant Squirrel where our naturalists slow down, look closer and uncover the wildlife stories hiding in plain sight.

Because sometimes, you don’t have to go looking for wildlife. You just have to know where to look.

Ganesha has always been surrounded by symbols of t Ganesha has always been surrounded by symbols of the natural world. The elephant, the mouse, the trees and the earth remind us that we are not separate from nature, but a part of it.

Perhaps that is why his arrival feels especially meaningful when celebrated along paths that lead us closer to the wild.

This Ganesh Chaturthi, as we celebrate new beginnings, may we also remember the forests, trails and living landscapes that have quietly sustained generations before us.

May we walk with gratitude, celebrate with care, and leave behind a world worth inheriting.

In celebration of Ganesha. In gratitude for nature.

For the first few seconds, there is nothing to see For the first few seconds, there is nothing to see. Only a sound.

A strange, trembling call moving through the trees of Tadvai. And then, slowly, the forest gives away its secret.

A Mottled Wood Owl. Strix ocellata — one of India’s beautifully camouflaged nocturnal hunters.

Found widely across the Indian subcontinent, the Mottled Wood Owl is especially associated with lightly wooded landscapes, open deciduous woodland, mature trees and groves. It can also occur around cultivated land and village edges, provided there are enough large trees to roost and nest in.

During the day, it can be remarkably difficult to spot. It usually rests quietly among dense foliage, often in pairs, relying on its mottled reddish-brown and white plumage to blend into the bark, branches and shadows around it.

And then comes dusk. This is when the forest begins to change.

The Mottled Wood Owl becomes active, hunting from perches and dropping silently onto prey below. Its diet can include rats, mice and squirrels, along with small birds, lizards, crabs, beetles and other large insects. As a nocturnal predator, it plays an important role in regulating populations of smaller animals in its habitat.

Its home is just as fascinating.

And that unforgettable call you heard at the beginning? It can be a conversation between two owls.

The male begins with a loud, quavering call, followed by the female’s shorter response, creating an eerie antiphonal duet that carries through the landscape.

So perhaps the most remarkable thing about this owl isn’t that it is hiding. It’s that it has been living quietly alongside us all this time.

We simply have to learn how to listen.

Hidden Stories is our invitation to do exactly that. At The Giant Squirrel, Tadvai, our naturalists take you beyond simply seeing wildlife - helping you listen, observe and understand the smaller stories unfolding around you.

If you want to experience the wild this way, come discover its hidden stories with us.

A mother. A handful of piglets. And a forest that A mother. A handful of piglets. And a forest that never really stops moving.

Spotted by our naturalists near The Breeze, Vikarabad, this wild boar family is a small glimpse into the lives unfolding around us.

Wild boars (Sus scrofa) are highly adaptable omnivores. Their characteristic rooting can disturb the topsoil, influence soil organisms and alter plant communities. But science tells us something important: their ecological impact isn’t simply “good” or “bad” — it depends on how often, how intensely and where that disturbance happens.

Even their movements can matter. Wild boars have been documented carrying and dispersing seeds, sometimes over considerable distances. So when our naturalists stop to watch a mother lead her young through the scrub, they’re not just witnessing a beautiful moment. They’re reading the landscape.

Because sometimes, the wild doesn’t announce itself. You just need to know where to look.
